Welcome to Learning Print Production

- Hi, I'm Claudia McCue. Welcome to this course all about print production fundamentals. I think you'll find that the world of printing is a fascinating but complex one and its requirements can hold some surprises for a designer, and in printing, surprise is usually not a good thing. In this course, I'll walk you through this world so that you feel more at home as you prepare for successful results. You'll see how jobs flow through the printing plant and you'll see what happens to the files that you submit. (gentle upbeat music) Throughout this course, I'll be using elements from the beautiful "Maker Quarterly," a publication from Mohawk Fine Papers, which we're using with their kind permission. It's a showcase for both lovely paper stock and some really interesting printing techniques. We'll talk about the different types of printing, including letterpress, sheet-fed, web offset, and more. I'm going to show you how to think about print as you're designing and how to create healthy print-ready files that will print without surprises. I'll tell you about process color versus spot color, how ink behaves on paper, and why it's important to build to the correct size. I'll discuss how to anticipate the requirements of folding and trimming and setting up for die cutting. My goal is to show you how to find problems before they become catastrophes. I'm really excited to share my knowledge with you. And after all these years, I still love printing. By the end of this course, I hope you will, too.
