Why grids matter
- Before we dive into designing with grids in InDesign, I'd like to say a few words about why I think grids are important. Grids and proportions have long been used in art and architecture. This is a page from the book Universal Principles of Design, showing the importance of the golden ratio in nature, the human form, architecture, and product design. The history of grids in graphic design goes back to the early twentieth century, when they were adopted as part of the design philosophy of influential art movements, like Constructivism, DeStijl, the Bauhaus, and the New Typography. After the chaos and devastation of the second world war, the structure the grids offered was very compelling, and a grid-based approach was taken up by what became known as the International Typographic Style.
