Copying and modifying a road style

- Many InfraWorks models contain roads, so the ability to customize road styles is pretty important. Let's take a look at how to apply a custom material group to a road style, to change the appearance of a road in your model. You'll also use the road style to change the geometry of the road as well. I've opened the Chapter Five Hotel Lynda model, and I've selected the road style proposal. I'll also choose the Hotel Southeast ISO bookmark. to set my view, next I'll open the style palette and I'll do that by clicking the InfraWorks icon, the manage icon, and then the style palette icon. On the style palette, I'll use the arrows to scroll down until I can see the road tab on the left side, and I'll change the view, to icon list, so that we can see the full names of the different styles available in this catalog. At the bottom, you'll see one called two lane with palms, and also one called two lane with palms complete, which is configured as though you have already completed this exercise. What I'd like to do, is take the work that we did in the previous video to reconfigure a new material group, and apply it with this two lane with palms style, which is currently assigned to the road. So that I don't change anything else in the model that might be already referencing this two lane with palms style, I'm going to copy this style, so I'll select it, click the duplicate button, to duplicate it within this catalog not into another catalog, it's the second icon. And I'll call this, my two lane with palms. Next, I want to make a change to that style, so I'll click it, and click the edit icon at the bottom. The first thing I need to do is swap out the material group. So I'll click the ellipsis, change the view here to icon list so I can see all of the names, and then what you should see, is one called my street materials. Now if you didn't complete the video prior to this one, you may not see that group, that's okay, you can use the my street materials complete group. I'll select that, click okay, and what I want to check is that the roadway designation has not changed. Here I see in the right group the word roadway, and I see that the track top surface category column also has the word roadway. The change to the preview also confirms that I've got a different style applied to the roadway pavement surface. You can see the dark asphalt that's being applied here. Another change that I'd like to make using this style is to widen the lanes a little bit. Right now, the road lanes are only 9.8 feet wide, that's pretty narrow. I'd like to use 12 feet for the width of the lanes. Now that's going to add quite a bit to the width of the overall road, so maybe I can take a bit back with the medians, and I see here that the green space on the medians is all the way up at 6.56 feet. So let's bump that back to four feet, and the preview at the bottom is a great tool to let you see exactly what's going on as you make changes. Now as I take a look at this preview, I see that, with the changes that I've made, the palms are no longer centered in the grass median. Well, I definitely want to address that. And to do that, I'll click the decorations icon up here, find the median bucket median one decoration target, and here's where I can adjust the geometry that determines the layout of these palm trees. The value I'm particularly interested in is track offset, and I'm going to change that too. I'll click close, and if I've done this properly, the palm trees should now be centered in the grass median, and it looks like they definitely are. So I'm pleased with the appearance of the road style, and I can click OK, and I won't see any change in the model yet, because I haven't yet applied that style to the road. Remember that we made a copy of it. I also want to point out that we made some pretty serious changes to that style, and you're certainly not expected to remember all that we just did. Really, we just want to demonstrate the function of going in to a style, and making some changes in how that affects the model. So let's see how our changes are going to affect the road in our model. In fact, to get the same view on the model that I'm getting, you can restore the bookmark called hotel road entrance, and then we'll drag and drop our style over to the road. But let's pay close attention to the color of the pavement, the width of lanes, and the width of the median, that should all change by simply dragging and dropping that style over to the road. And it definitely does, you can see the much darker pavement style, you can see the narrower median, and because we addressed the spacing of the palms, they are still centered in the median area. As you've seen, road styles can be modified to meet your needs as they relate to geometry as well as appearance. Now that you've completed this video, you have some knowledge about how to modify road styles, and you can begin customizing the road styles in your models.
