Editing trees

- It's important to be able to edit the trees in your model so that you can achieve the size, style and arrangement that suits your project. Let's take a look at how to modify trees in your model to create the effect that meets your needs. I've opened the chapter for Hotel Lynda model and selected the edit trees proposal. I'm also going to choose the hotel plan bookmark. And now if you do all of those things your screen should look like mine. Let's first talk about how to edit individual trees. Going to zoom in to the trees in front of the building that were created as individuals. If I click on a tree, you'll see that it has its own set of editing gizmos. If you've watched other videos in the series you may already know what these gizmos do, but I'll review. The one at the top adjusts the height of the tree and you can click and drag it to change the height. You can even enter a number in the tooltip. At the corners we have the rotate gizmos and over here, off to the side, we have the move gizmo. You can click the square to move the tree in the X, Y plane or you can click any of the axis arrows to move the tree in the direction of that arrow. In all cases you can type in values in the tooltip to precisely move a certain amount. The square gizmo at the base of the tree can be used to move it in any direction. So that's how you modify individual trees. What if you're dealing with a group of trees like a row or stand? We've got a row of trees along the west side of our property here and as you can see they're quite small. We want them to be much bigger to provide the screen effect that we're looking for. Now if I click a tree in this row it will show its individual gizmos but only for that one tree. One extra item that I do see is the screen dashed line indicating that these trees are related to one another and that they are a row configuration. Now in this case, I can use the square gizmo and actually re-align the row. So it serves a different function than I saw earlier with the individual tree. Now I can use the gizmos to edit the properties of this individual tree, but what if I wanna do all of them at once? The answer is pretty simple. All I need to do is double click one of the trees in the row. Now it will zoom in because of the double click zoom behavior of InfraWorks but all I have to do is zoom out and you'll notice that the entire row is selected. And now whatever I do with the editing gizmos will happen to all of the trees. You'll also notice that the entire row of trees has been encapsulated in this imaginary selection box. If I click the height gizmo and drag it upward and let go the heights of all the trees will be adjusted. I can also rotate the entire row and move the entire row using the move gizmo. Something else I can do is adjust the density slider that I'll find at the center of the selection box. If I want to add more trees to the row I slide the slider to the right. If I want to add less trees, I slide it to the left. But you'll notice that any manual edits that I've made to the row have been lost. They go back to their original size and configuration. So you're gonna want to modify the density first and then adjust the other features as needed. So I'll make these trees nice and tall. I'll make the row nice and dense, so that we have a nice solid vegetative wall between our two properties. I'll press the escape key to clear the selection and now we have a nice row of trees providing a screen between the two properties. For the stand of trees in the back the rules are the same. If you click one tree, you can double click that individual tree. There are square gizmos where you can adjust the outline of the stand. And then to adjust all of the trees at once you double click one of them. All of them are selected. You will have to zoom out. You want to adjust the density slider first. And then make graphical edits to the sizes of the trees or the rotation, what have you. Another thing you can do with your trees is you can use the style pallet to change their style. You'll notice I have a style pallet icon here right with the other creation tools. I'll click style pallet, find the tab that contains the tree styles on it, which is going to be the 3D model tab. On the 3D model tab we see a vegetation catalog and we simply find the tree that we like. Drag and drop from the style catalog to the tree. If we want to do this to the entire stand of trees we double click, there we go. Have them all selected, and now whatever I do to the stand as far as dragging and dropping styles will be done to the entire group of trees. As you can see, with the many editing tools and many styles available in InfraWorks, you can create just about any look you want for the trees and other vegetation in your model. Now that you've seen this video, you can modify the trees in your models to get the look and arrangement you need.
