Generating the K factor

- [Teacher] One of the things we need to realize when we are doing traffic simulation and analysis is that the traffic counts that we get from a daily traffic count, they don't occur equally over every hour of the day. So what we're looking at right now is the average annual daily traffic. So where we had our little spreadsheet, we had 16,077, that was the total volume of vehicle traffic of a highway or road for one year divided by 365 days. And that number represents traffic on a typical day of the year. Okay, that's great. But when we model, we're not interested in an entire day, or very rarely, what we want to know is when are things going to start backing up, when are we likely to see cues. And that is what we're talking about when we say the K value. So the K value is the peak hour or design our values.
