Save a bridge as a custom component

- [Instructor] We have our bridge as we want it, so why don't we save the entire bridge as a template so that it can be used again and again. What we can do is just select the bridge, and just for clarity's sake if any of the component display's are switched off, you can switch them back on again. So we have our bridge type over here with the assembly. And what we're going to do is save this so that we can use it again. And it's a matter of just right clicking and saying add to library. We will get a little box that comes up, and asking us to give it a name. Call it four lane bridge with streetlights. There you go. So, let's hit okay. And, if we go to our style palette and we go to bridge template, under custom there will be the four lane bridge with streetlights. And this is a template that we can apply to various different bridges. In fact, let's have a look at doing something like that right now. I would like you to go to bridge proposal bridge design eight and head over to bookmark bridge view 21. Right. From the Infoworks Intelligent Tools choose the road button, and then choose the little pencil icon. Next up, hit the component roads button. And this just helps us, or allows us, to add road assemblies to the model. Click on that and just click, click to put in a road. Double click to end it. And a road will be put onto our model. Now, it's going to look very strange because we didn't do any proper grading or any type of preparation. But that doesn't matter, all we want to do is use it as an example. Right, the next thing that we're going to do is we are going to choose the bridge component. And just as we did earlier, grab a pencil and put in precast bridge clicking once and double clicking across the span to get the bridge in. Again, our bridge is going to look terribly weird because of the road that we put it on. But, just one last thing we can do just to check our bridge type assembly. We can click on select assembly, and we can put in a four lane bridge with streetlights. And double click on that just to see what happens. So, zoom in here, and does it look anything like our other bridge? No, it doesn't. And this is something that you have to remember when using bridge templates. Even though we have the template, even though we have the same thickness, we have the same type of piers, we have the same cast iron girders underneath. We have the same bespoke abutment that we put in there, many many of the parameters of this bridge are driven by the road. So, first of all we need a four lane road to apply this to. And then secondly, we'd still have to specify attributes like the number of piers and the number of girders. So even though we have a template, what that template does is it remembers things like whether you're using a concrete piers, concrete girders or steel girders. What kind of pier you're using, how many rods are there in the foundation, what kind of abutments are you using. It doesn't actually keep the look and feel of the bridge together. So when you're looking at bridge templates, just keep it in mind that this is something that will have to still be paramaterized, as opposed to just a carbon copy of a bridge that you created earlier. So, with that we can zoom out and just select our road. We can delete that, because we no longer need it.
