Understanding superelevation

- [Instructor] All right. Let's have a look at what InfraWorks allows us to do with superelevation. We are still in our InfraWorks 2021 road design model. And I'm at the home position right here. I'd like you to do is just head over to the bookmarks, and choose bookmark number three, superelevation A, and here we're going to have a look at a road which already has some superelevation associated with it before we start going in and creating our own roads, and doing superelevation that way. So click on this road right in front of you. You'll see it's a component road obviously, we've got critical stations. And I'm just going to right click, and on check show road geometry. That's just so that the little handlers and, they're getting in my way. With the road selected, head over to the stack on the right hand side and click the little slider that says apply or remove superelevation. And then you'll get a note at the bottom that says, hit enter or click away to show your superelevation. So let's just click away. The model will update and nothing happens. Oh my goodness, what's gone wrong. Well, that is because superelevation is also one of the options that we get to show on our context menu when we right click. So right click on the road again, hit show superelevation, and there we can see superelevation. We can see the number of critical stations. These are the blue slices. We can see the superelevation tracks and it might be easier for you to change the view a little bit. So up in the right hand side, you've got your conceptual view. Let's try engineering view. No, that's a little bit busy with all of the contours. So head back to conceptual view, and under settings, you could do things like just lower the surface opacity or up the brightness or the light intensity, just so that it gives you a clearer view of the colors associated with our superelevation. I'm going to close the view settings. Let's have a brief overview of what superelevation is. Now superelevation is basically the difference in height, between the inside of a curve and the outside of a curve. And it's sometimes called banking. The outer edge of the curve is raised in comparison to the inner one. The purpose of it is to give you more effective grip, when you traveling round these curves. Now, obviously if you're in a vehicle it's important, if you're on foot, it's not so important. So InfraWorks allows you to apply superelevations component roads, to bridge decks, to intersections and turn lanes zones. So now that we've just had a brief overview of what superelevation is and how it looks on an existing road, let's draw some of our own roads, and apply superelevation to those.
