Working with piers

- In this exercise you're going to learn how to modify bridge piers. We're going to zoom in to our bridge where in our last exercise we were changing the girders. So I'm going to change my contextual view settings to engineering view that way I can see everything underneath the ground or terrain. So here's our piers it's basically everything that's supporting our bridge. So we have our piers, we have our support columns that go underneath our piers and then over to the left at the beginning of our bridge those are our abutments. When I select my piers, I'll need to select it twice because the first time its going to select the bridge. Click it one more time and you'll see the grips show up so that is my pier here. It actually selected that one single pier. And then on the stack I can change the type of pier that's actually being used. So enhance standard pier. I'm going to change to click on that option. And on the left is my select component dial light box. And here I have a large library of different types of piers. At the bottom, I'm going to select that wall anchored pier. I'll double click. If it works it'll immediately update the actual structure within the model. As you can see it's much different than the other ones. At the bottom under materials within the stack, I'm actually going to change the texture and going to use a brick style. Click OK. Notice you'll actually have a nice brick material on this pier. And this is the top cap of the pier. I can continue changing the parameters of that pier also with any geometry section of the stack. So the depth here I can type in maybe 15 there we go. Opening diameter, opening vertical offsets, rounding opening. There's large amounts of parameters that can be changed and modified by that structural engineer. Under volume material we also have the concrete. We can change it from concrete to precast to structural steel. As you can see here multiple options. And then I hit the ESC key, and I'm going to select my pier again. Twice, until I see that grip I added show up. I'm going to right-click and say apply to all piers. There we go. As you can see it applied that same type of structural and style to all the piers. I'm going to select my pier again. I'm going to rotate it slightly, like that. Or I could type in an angle, come back again, and say add to all piers or the next section. I'm going to say all piers. Here we go. As you can see there's many different types of parameters and attributes assigned to those piers that you can modify and change. And this is a great tool for structural engineers designing bridges within Infoworks.
