Learn how to use hashtags when uploading photos and videos. Utilizing hashtags on Instagram allows marketers to reach a wider audience than they normally would.
- [Instructor] Hashtags are a crucial element of marketing on Instagram. They allow you to reach a much wider audience than just those that follow your account. When you publish a post to your Instagram feed, you should be adding relevant hashtags in order to make it as discoverable as possible. For example, if we're uploading this photo to our account, after we've added a descriptive caption which we have already taking a stroll in the rain, we could add some hashtags like rain umbrella, city, walking, and shops. These are all obvious hashtags to add to this photo, but there may also be some more obscure hashtags that you may want to use. For example, the eye catching hashtag is often used for photos that really grab people's attention. Discovering these more obscure hashtags will take some time, but there are a couple of tips to finding different hashtags. When you start typing a hashtag, a list of popular hashtags will start to appear and you can see how many posts have been tagged with each particular one. For example, if I start to type photography, we'll just type say photo and now we have our list, so there's 534 million post tagged photography. You can see #photo, #photooftheay, #photographer #photoshoot, and the list goes on. You can kind of assume that the more posts a particular hashtag has, the more popular that hashtag is considered. So when you're adding hashtags to your next post, do some experimenting to see if you can find some related hashtags that you wouldn't necessarily think of right away. Another way to find more obscure hashtags is to follow others in your industry and see what hashtags they're using. Finally, you may also want to follow some hashtags yourself on Instagram. This is one of the best ways to discover new users and new hashtags. You can either search for hashtags to follow from within the Instagram app on the search page or you can tap on a hashtag in a post and then tap on the follow button when you're brought to that hashtags feed. So let's go ahead and let's just post this photo. So let's go ahead and tap on the umbrella hashtag. So now we're viewing all the photos and videos that people have tagged with umbrella and you'll notice at the top we have the option to follow this hashtag. At the same time, there's also a list of related hashtags. So this could give us some ideas right here on different hashtags that might be a good fit for our organization. I recommend that you follow a number of hashtags related to your industry so you can start to interact with those posts and become an influencer in that industry on Instagram. You can also take a look at the photos that other users in your industry are posting and see what hashtags they're using. Let's talk about a few additional considerations when working with hashtags. You can fit up to 30 hashtags in the description of a photo on Instagram. You can also fit up to 30 hashtags in a comment on Instagram. It isn't necessary to always max out the number of hashtags in each post, but the more you add, the more potential reach that post will have. Some users don't put any hashtags in the caption of a post to make it clean and neat, but then they'll add their 30 hashtags to the first comment on the post. So it will be more discoverable. Depending on what your style is, this may work for you. I want to quickly mention that there is one drawback of this strategy and that is you can always go back in and then edit the description or the caption of a photo, but you can't edit the comments. So if you're going to add hashtags to comments, you need to be absolutely certain that you've got them right the first time. I can't stress enough how important hashtags are in building your following on Instagram. I recommend that you make use of them as much as possible and become familiar with which ones are most popular in your industry.
