Create a practice project

- [Instructor] We're now ready to look at project files. Project files tell inventor where to store files and where to look for files while you're designing. On the Dashboard, we have the ability to switch between projects quite easily but you can't create projects from within this section of the dialog box. In order to create a project, we need to go to the Getting Started tab under the Launch Panel and select projects. Now what we're going to do here is simply create a project that you can use for practice. Anytime you're not using this course and you just want to practice in an inventor, this is where you can store your files. It's a nice way to keep your test files all centrally located. Now, in this dialogue box you'll also notice the projects that we saw on the Dashboard but you'll see additional information. Now we're not going to go into all of this but it basically lays out some basic information about the project. It's a Single User Project, here's where it's located. We can find out if there's libraries of any kind attached to it, basic metadata about the project. We're going to go ahead and skip that now and just simply hit New. And now we're asked if we want to Single User Project or a Vault Project. Now Vault Projects are more for a team collaborative environment so we're going to stick with a Single User Project. We'll hit Next and now we can name and locate that project. So in this case, we're going to go ahead and create a practice files project. And as I typed, you can see that the project folder location was updated as well. But this isn't where I want these files. I actually want to place them in a practice folder on my Desktop. To do that, I simply click the Browse for Project location button at the end of the dialogue, I can select Desktop and then I can Make a New Folder and I'll call it practice. I'll hit Enter and it creates the folder. And now when I select OK, you can see it's called practice files and I have a folder on my Desktop called practice. If I select Next, here's where I would have an option to enter libraries but they're a little more advanced and we don't need them, this is optional. So I'm going to go ahead and skip that and select Finish. Now what you can see is we have a practice files project and a Desktop location for those practice files. What's important here is that by doing that when you select the open dialog you can see that you're in your practice folder by default and there's nothing in it so you can go ahead and create files and store them in this folder. If we were to activate, for example, my inventor 2020 essentials and then select Open you'll see that there's a number of folders here that have exercise files in them already. And that's what we'll look at in the next movie.
