- [Instructor] When the project that became Java started in 1991, the goal was to create a new portable programming language that could run on multiple operating systems without having to recompile or port the code. The original name of the project was Oak. But due to various copyright issues it became Java. The original tagline for Java was write once, run everywhere. And the original version was released in 1995, nearly a quarter century ago as of the time of this recording. The earlier releases of Java came out irregularly. Early on, new versions were released about once a year, but then gaps started appearing. Between Java 1.3 and 1.4 there were two years, and another two years went by before Java 5 came out. And this is when a new versioning system was introduced. There were differences now between the internal version which would be 1.5, and the external or marketing version which became whole numbers, in this case…
