The history of Java

- [Instructor] Java has a long history. It started in 1991, when Sun Microsystems began something called the Green Project. The goal of the Green Project was to create a new portable programming language, one that could be used to create applications that would run on multiple operating systems without having to recompile or port the code. The original name of the language was Oak, for a large oak tree that stood outside the windows of the developers' offices, but by the time the language was first released, it was renamed as Java, supposedly because of the amount of coffee that the developers were drinking. The original tag line for Java was "Write once, run anywhere." And again, the goal of Java was that you'd be able to write a program and then compile it once and then run it on Unix, on Windows, on Mac, and on any other operating system for which there was a Java Virtual Machine.
