Adding integers with the same sign

- Since you already know how to add two integers with positive signs, in this video we'll discover a rule that will allow you to add two negative integers. In our first problem, we're going to evaluate - 5 + (-4). Notice that in this problem, both numbers have the same sign, they are both negative. So using the number line, we're going to start on -5, and typically when we add numbers we would move to the right. Since we're adding a negative number, we're going to move in the direction of the negatives, which is to the left. So we're going to move to the left four spaces. One, two, three, four. And we end up on -9 . So -5 + (-4) is equal to -9. In our next problem, we're going to evaluate - 8 + (-10). In this problem, we're going to use integer chips. Here we have -8, and we're going to use eight red integer chips. The red chips indicate that the number is negative. Since we're adding -10, we also have 10 red integer chips.
