Design master slides: Create templates - Keynote Tutorial

- [Instructor] Once we have created a blank theme on Keynote, we can start editing our master slides. Remember how in one of our earlier movies, we defined the goals and template structure we needed for our presentations? Well this is where we apply that plan. Let's say our primary goal is to use this slide deck as a client proposal or even to raise brand awareness. We'll start simple and we're going to design five slides to get us started. We're going to do a presentation slide, an introduction slide, a key point slide which will replace the bullet points, and I will explain why that is so valuable. We're going to do a team slide and an individual team member slide. Now we get to go into the part that I enjoy the most, which is creating the design and content structure. So let's dig in. If you aren't a designer, you may be feeling uneasy about this part, but don't worry. I've got something that will make this process so much easier for you. In the exercise files for this movie, you will find a folder called master slide template. This folder contains this Keynote file that you're seeing right now. I've already made it to where you can actually start adding your own content by using these elements as placeholders. If you don't have access to these files, don't worry. Let me show you how I go about importing a JPEG background and use that as my guide to design my template inside Keynote. Inside our master slides, and you want to make sure that you are working from your master slides to create your templates. I'm going to use the blank slide and what I'm going to do next is I'm going to go into my media and I'm going to import this flat JPEG that I created as my guide. So I'm actually going to use my introduction slide and I'm going to insert it. If I drag that, you can see it's just a plain transparent PNG. What we'll do next is that we're actually going to resize all this content to fit what we have in our template. You can adjust the color as well so that it's easier for you to tell which color would overlap, as we have some overlap here with the shapes. Then what you can do is you can either drag your shape or copy paste, or you can go back into your shape panel to add a new one. Sometimes I like to drag this because it makes it easier. So what you can do to change the color so it's easier for you to define, go into your style panel under color fill, select a different color, then make sure that this image goes towards the back. So go to the arrange panel, send it to the back. It's going to disappear but that's okay 'cause you want to be able to see all these elements as you're building your template. Next, what we're going to do is we're going to add our text over here. So we're going to go to the text area here and you see this little itty-bitty text up here. So you want to have some just plain copy written that you can use. So I just copy pasted some of my copy and all I need to do is adjust this so that it aligns with my template. Then I'll repeat the same process for my title and subtitle text. Now I have added my text there, and as you can see my subtitle text is pretty large but my title isn't. What happens is you need to make sure that you select your text and use one of these styling options for your paragraph styles. We will style these in a later movie. But I just want to share with you, these are the basic ones that come whenever you start from scratch. I'm going to select title then I'm going to go and make sure that I can align it over here and start to adjust this. Now I can delete my background and all I need to do is just select each of these elements here, go into my style panel at the very bottom, define as text place holder, and you'll want to make sure that you give this a name so that it's easy for you to follow and then just repeat the same process for all of these items that you have or these elements that you have on your slide. Once we have finished creating our placeholder template inside our master slides, we're ready to add some content and make this feel less like a bunch of gray boxes.
