- What is crowdfunding? Crowdfunding is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising monetary contributions from a large number of people, or backers. This practice is far from a newer idea. One of the most famous examples of crowdfunding was for the Statue of Liberty. When funding to finish constructing the pedestal for the statue fell severely short, a man named Joseph Pulitzer, as in Pulitzer prizes, conducted a six month campaign looking to the American people for help. Consisting of over 120,000 donations of mostly less than a dollar each, the micro-funding campaign embraced the emotional appeal of the statue and what it would mean for American pride. Crowdfunding can be executed a number of ways, but the most common way projects and products are crowdfunded these days is via the internet.
