From the course: Crowdfunding Campaigns for Independent Film

An equity crowdfunding platform

- There are now several choices of platforms if you decide to pursue equity crowdfunding to finance your independent film. The site slated.com is one that is exclusively for film financing. They boast that 68% of 2016 Sundance films and 54% of Oscar 2016 films were made by Slated members. Many people in the film industry feel that building relationships and networking is one of the most important things you should pursue and Slated is a marketplace that connects investors, filmmakers and industry professionals. It allows you to get the attention of equity investors, sales agents, festival programmers and distributors. Slated is geared toward feature films with budgets of $500,000 and over and documentaries with $250,000-$2 million budgets. There are no campaigns or deadlines. You create a profile and investors can contact you personally to pursue opportunities. Investors can track and follow projects within the site. If an investor tracks you, you as a filmmaker can e-mail them directly. No funding at all is physically transacted through Slated. The goal is to create relationships with investors. In order to become an investor on Slated you need to be accredited by the SEC, referred by other members, and be approved directly by Slated itself. Remember, before engaging in equity crowdfunding you need to carefully consider making the success of your film dependent upon financial gain versus your film's completion and the rewards you would typically offer your backers.
