- Employee needs and expectations have changed, and as such, we need to adapt. So let's look at four leadership roles and capabilities that support employee performance, and which are not typically listed in a manager's job description. The first is steward. This is being entrusted with the care of something. The key word here is entrusted, trusted with responsibility. So as this relates to a leader, it implies embracing full responsibility for all persons and their activities. We can see employee performance problems percolate when this role is not fully embraced. For example, you may have a toxic employee that is hurting the health and productivity of the team. The manager has allowed the behavior to exist. If a condition is hurting the team, that is not good stewardship. My mantra in every leadership workshop is you are stewards of the talent within your organization. That talent has been entrusted to you. So an important question for every manager is, are you worthy of that trust?…
