- Almost no one is ever prepared to manage. It's one of the most predictable cognitive errors made by millions of professionals every year. We assume that since we're technically competent, we'll make a good manager. Maybe, maybe not. The skill sets are very different. As a technical person, you survive by using only one language, but now you need two. The team you lead will understand details, acronyms, and customer needs in great detail, but the bosses you're now going to report to will speak in terms of budgets, strategic plans, process measures, and a host of other things your team won't understand or care about.
