- "If you only have a hammer, "you'll see everything as a nail," said Abraham Maslow. I observe managers who approach problems the same way every time with every employee. But before addressing the problem, it's important to know exactly what it is. So let's take a look at five key organizational forces that influence employee performance. First, company culture creates behaviors. An employee's performance is shaped by their day-to-day experiences and interactions. The second force that influences employee performance is how leaders behave. This can be both in what they model, that is walk the talk, and what they tolerate. Employees are keenly attune to this and are affected both consciously and subconsciously. In a great Harvard Business Review article, dr. Daniel Goleman found that our brains work in a way that causes followers to mirror leaders. Third is weak communication about values and desired behaviors.
