- Very often, a promotion into leadership leads to distance, sometimes real distance. A new office, a new floor, new colleagues to spend time with, new perks, lots of new work, and bigger decisions. This is normal, but the cumulative effect is that your employees feel removed from you. Don't allow that to happen. Their comfort in collaborating with you and their acceptance of your actions depends on the quality of your connection with the team. Your goal is to be viewed as their supervisor and also as a member of the team. Step one is to schedule time to be with them. This comes in different forms, and let's be clear, I'm not talking about time spent emailing or using instant messages or group apps, I'm talking about actually being physically present with them.
