Understand the current situation
- Having goals is great. It gives us direction and can be motivating, especially if we believe it's an achievable stretch. But to know we can do it, we have to understand where we are today relative to the goal. If you're a motivated person, then there's very little worse than knowing your goal can't be achieved without serious harm. For example, I'd like to lose 10 pounds, but if I try to do that in one week, there will be significant cost to my health. So, it's important that we understand our current situation relative to the goal. Why? Well, first, we use the best available information to figure out the gaps we need to close. Second, we can ask ourselves if it can be done without significant cost. For example, last week I ran two miles for the first time. The likelihood of me running a marathon this weekend without injuring myself is not high. And lastly, we can be honest with ourselves. Are we willing to do the work and make the trade-offs to manifest this goal into a reality?…
