- The trouble with not having a goal is that you spend your life running up and down the field and never score. That's a great quote from Bill Copeland. It's hard to believe that many managers do not use goals in performance management because there is science to its value. The very act of goal setting can greatly increase results and improve performance overall. Here's why. The use of goals and the act of goal setting engages the best of how the brain operates. Here are two functions in particular. The brain thinks in pictures and movies, and those pictures and movies generate feelings. So let's experiment with this right now. Think about a goal you'd like to set. As you begin to think about the goal, and it's beginning to formulate in your brain, you're creating a picture of it. Now begin to map out a plan to achieve the goal. Notice, as you're doing this your brain begins to create a movie about how the goal is being achieved.
