The role of boundaries
- When I was growing up, I lived in a fun neighborhood. You could say it felt like family. And though we were always welcomed at each other's homes, one thing we knew for sure, what was expected while we were there. Each mom had things that were acceptable or not. They had boundaries. And of course, if you didn't honor them, you'd be in big trouble. Boundaries are behavior guidelines. They set up expectations, desires or preferences. Essential to a happy, well-functioning family or to a successful well-performing team. So how can you use them for your team? First, be clear about the boundaries needed for your team to function at their best. Not only related to their specific job descriptions but equally as important how they behave towards you and within the group. Second, you need to consistently communicate them individually and to the group. Make them obvious, leave no doubt. And third, you need to consistently hold people accountable to your boundaries.
