How do I sharpen a photo?

- Sharpening is the adding of detail into the areas that need it. And it's not a blurry or out of focus picture, but rather it's the loss of detail that's sometimes caused as the digital files are decoded. Let's take a look at this image here. I'm going to zoom in and you see the details. It's sharp, but what I'd like to do is emphasize those details, particularly the water. If we go here over to the details controls, you'll see we have that ability. Let's overdo sharpening for a moment. You'll see at maximum value, it's pretty aggressive. And as we increase the radius, it affects a broader area. Now, what I tend to do is push it pretty far and then I could back it off, but here's something cool. A lot of folks don't know that you could use the masking slider. If we hold down the option key, masking becomes really easy to understand. Now I could see the areas in white that are being affected.
