- [Instructor] Lens selection. In this section, we'll cover the lens and how picking a lens or a focal length influences the overall look of your photos. You don't need a specific lens to shoot a silhouette. Any lens will work. The kit lens that comes with modern day DSLRs are quite good and they can easily capture a great silhouette. Let's go over how different lenses will affect the look of your resulting image. There are wide angle lenses, mid range lenses and zoom lenses. I've shot a series of photos all from the same spot on the edge of a pool overlooking a vista using a full frame camera. The only thing changing is the lens. Let's start with long lenses or long zoom lenses. Here's a silhouette shot at 189 millimeters. As you can see, we are capturing quite a bit of detail in the kids, but the sky is blurry and not a very large portion of the sunset is seen. The part we can see is pretty, but it doesn't have a lot of definition. Even when we turn the camera to landscape…
