- [Instructor] How long should a hard drive last? I mean, if you copy data to it, your pictures, your music, your movies, is it there forever? Should it be there for a few years? Is it somewhere in between? Well it's funny that you should think that, and if you weren't thinking that, I hope you are now, (laughter) 'cause that's why I'm doing this movie. What I did was, I had a dozen hard drives stashed away in a closet that had not been fired up for ten years or more. You're looking at these hard drives right now. And what I decided to do, was okay, I'm going to pull these hard drives out, I'm going to find the cords for them, and I'm going to fire them up and see which ones can I copy data from and which ones are just a total failure. Very interesting, now of those hard drives seven of them were portables, and I define a portable by a hard drive that did not need external powers, it was smaller and it was less…
