Strategies for prolonging the health of older hard drives
- [Narrator] If you are hanging on to older hard drives and you want to make sure you get the most out of them, I do have a few tips for you. The first one being don't do what I did. These poor guys here. Where I locked them up in a closet and forgot about them for a decade. What you really want to do is pull them out a couple times a year, fire them up, listen to them. If you have a disk maintenance software or something that allows you to check the hard drive, check the integrity of the drive, run that, and then once you do that, roll them back down, right, eject them properly, unplug them and put them back into storage. That will really help them last a bit longer. When you're using hard drives, if it's a drive that you have connected to your computer, then make sure that it's in a well ventilated area, make sure that it doesn't get dropped or jostled, and make sure that if you're going to disconnect it you eject it…
