Understanding how Lightroom Classic works

- [Instructor] There are essentially three parts to understanding Lightroom Classic. First is the application itself. And second, is a catalog file. The catalog does the work of managing the photo library and the image edits. And finally, there's your photos. The Lightroom Classic application creates this catalog file the first time you launch the application and this happens automatically. So, it's pretty easy to miss. You'll find the catalog file on your computer probably in the pictures folder with the extension dot lrcat. The catalog file contains image previews, image edits, metadata information, and saved presets. But most importantly, it does not contain your photos. Your photos are located somewhere on a local hard drive not inside the Lightroom Classic catalog. I'm taking the time to review this here because the relationship between the catalog and the photos is key to understanding Lightroom Classic and it's commonly misunderstood by beginners. The most important thing to understand about Lightroom Classic is that the catalog does not hold or contain your photos. It simply references the location of them. Now with that understood let's jump in and take a tour of Lightroom Classic next.
