When to skip Auto Tone

- Just like Auto Align, Lightroom can also make automatic guesses for toning. Remember, toning is the process of balancing out the shadows and the highlights, as well as any contrast or clarity. What's happening here is Lightroom is making its best guess to restore a nice crisp white and black point. Well that's fine, if you feel uncomfortable with the sliders take advantage of that, but typically you're going to move those sliders anyways. You'll notice here with Auto Tone that it's adjusted the contrast. If I uncheck it, it goes back to a slightly less-exposed image. Well nothing's really changed here with the file, it's still going to make the same DNG file. If I leave Auto Tone deselected and click Merge, the new file will be generated and it's just one less step, there we go. If we take a look here under the Develop module you'll notice that all of the sliders were zeroed out.
