Identify and add skills

- [Oliver] Hopefully it's clear that learning new skills and staying up to date in your industry is very important. What does that mean though? What is it that you have to learn in order to be future ready? Well, it's not that easy. It really depends on the industry that you're in, as well as your aspirations. Let's take a look and how to determine the skills that you should be learning. First, be transparent. Ask your employer if there are any skills that they see as a future need for your organization. Otherwise, the answer to your question for your specific situation is going to take some good, old fashioned research. These are some of the ways in which you can determine what skills, tools, and technologies are important to learn in your industry. Find LinkedIn profiles of other people in your industry, or people who have a similar role, or whoever role that you'd eventually like to attain. Find people who are thought leaders or people who seem to be well connected. On their profiles, check out the skills that they have listed. Check out what they're posting about. As you look at more and more profiles, you'll start to notice trends. Another one is to look at job postings on LinkedIn that are similar to the position you currently are in, or a job that you'd eventually like to have. What type of skills are they looking for? Do you have those skills? Next, pay attention to your LinkedIn newsfeed. The information and articles that people are sharing will contain a lot of information about new tools, software, and skills that are trending or becoming more important. And finally, but most importantly, read, read, read. Read books, articles, and blog posts related to your industry. Do a Google search to find out what people are recommending that you read about. Now, there is another really important aspect to this video. Once you've determined what skills that you'd like to learn more about, you can enter them into your LinkedIn Learning profile so it can help curate better content that's personalized for you. Let's take a look at how to do this. On my LinkedIn Learning homepage, in the upper right corner, I'm going to click on Me. And from the drop down menu, I want to select Skills. Once I do this, you'll see that I have some skills in here. These were ones that I entered when I set up my account. Now you can add skills, however. Down below, it has some suggested skills. For instance, from this list, maybe I want to add E-Learning. I'll click and add that as one of my skills. Maybe there's another one on here that I don't see but I want on here. That is Training & Development. I'll click on this and it adds that skill. Now once you've added these skills, and once you begin consuming more content, LinkedIn Learning will continue to customize the content that they recommend to you. I'm going to navigate back to the homepage, and here reemphasize that your dashboard will be different than mine. Because yours will be personalized to you in order to suggest skills that are relevant to what you're trying to do.
