Expand upon work experience

- [Instructor] One of the most common things to include on a resume or LinkedIn profile is your past work experience. In this case, I'm inside of Julie Parker's account. And if I scroll down, I can see that she did list her previous work experience. She was a Program Manager at Red30 Tech, an Associate Program Manager at Two Trees Olive Oil, and so on. Now, I can see where she worked, as well as the dates and the location, but I can't tell much else from this. It's kind of boring. Now, if I switch over to Julie's resume right here, we can see that she also has her work experience. But, in this case, she elaborated on it, and put some bullet points telling things that she did. Well, you should do the same thing on your LinkedIn account. I'm going to go ahead and copy these bullet points, and then go back over to her LinkedIn profile. Now, for experience, I'm going to go ahead to the right, for program manager, and click on the pencil icon. When I do this, we get this pop-up box. And at the bottom, we have a section for description. Now, Julie had left this blank, but I don't think that's a good idea. I'm going to paste in these bullet points, where it says things like she led a worldwide strategy and delivery management team. She influenced and negotiated with stakeholders to establish and meet company-wide goals. So, it's important to add these because you wouldn't know what a person did in that position, unless they let you know. Now, you can also showcase some of your work from that position by uploading, or linking, to whether it's a photo, a site, video. presentation, whatever. In this case, I'm not going to do that, but I'm going to go ahead and click save. Now, when I do that, you can see it adds those bullet points to this position, and really tells me a lot more about what Julie did in this position. This will make it much easier for hiring managers to look and see if you're a good fit for the position they're hiring for. Now, I could do the same thing here for the next one, by clicking on that pencil icon. I'll go back over here to her resume. Copy that. Go down. I'll paste it. Save it. And like that, we've added it here as well. Now, I think this can be especially important to people who are switching fields or careers, which is becoming very common. It's important because if you're switching fields, there's no doubt that it's difficult to know if you're qualified or experienced. By elaborating on your work experience and what you've accomplished, you can use this section to tell your story, and show that you've utilized similar skills that will be needed in your new position. Adding work experience is a difficult thing for many people, including college students, who just graduated and don't have work experience, or people who are returning after a career break. In these cases, it's extra important to tell your story through your LinkedIn profile. You can do this with your summary, elaborating on past experiences, adding volunteer experience, adding skills, and more. So, the message here: elaborate on your work experience. Let people know what you did.
