- [Instructor] Linux operating systems are designed with remote access built in. Most often that is via the SSH command line. However, there are protocols to allow remote GUI access, as well. X Windows is the de facto standard for remote desktop on Unix and Linux systems plus there is VNC, or Virtual Network Computing, RDP, or Remote Desktop Protocol, a protocol created by Microsoft and a new protocol named SPICE. In most cases remote GUI access is accomplished by using an application on the client which connects to a service on the Remote Host via a remote desktop protocol. The Remote Host updates the display on the Local Host. The Local Host then sends keyboard or mouse events back across the network to the Remote Host.
