Basic features of Btrfs

- [Narrator] In the past, the job of dividing up drives and then formatting them was handled by two separate processes. Drives were divided up using partitions or logical volume management and then the volumes were formatted with a file system such as EXT4 or XFS using a different set of tools. If you needed to create or repair partitions, you'd use partition tools. If you needed to create or repair logical volumes, you use LVM tools, and if you needed to create or repair file systems, you'd use tools specific to the type of file system you're using. There are different tools for EXT-based file systems, XFS file systems, and so on. A new era in file systems has begun and one could argue that it started with Sun Microsystems' ZFS file system.
