- [Instructor] If you plan to install Debian directly on a computer, so it's the operating system that the computer boots into we'll need to take the installation image file and put it on some kind of media that a computer can boot up from. If you're planning to install on a virtual machine you don't need to take this step. The ISO image that we downloaded represents a data structure on an optical disc. In the case of a DVD image, a DVD rom. It's more than just a bunch of files like we'd find in a ZIP file or something like that. It contains a series of partitions each with specific roles, including the boot partition and data partitions where the installer and packages are kept. We can use this file in two ways. Either we can write it to optical media or we can use some software to write to external storage like a flash drive. Simply copying the file to some other media won't work.
