The Debian distribution

- [Voiceover] The Debian distribution has a long history. It was started by Ian Murdock, and was first released in 1993. Debian is maintained by the Debian project, with support from the organization Software in the Public Interest. Debian was among the first distributions of Linux. A distribution is a collection of tools and decisions tested and provided together as a unit or product, designed to make installing Linux more approachable and standardized. Debian started out in a world where to install Linux, you'd download the kernel source code and compile it yourself. You'd add packages for anything you wanted your system to have, like any software you wanted to use, the system management tools, the standard tools to work with the system and files, and literally anything else you needed a system to do.
