- [Instructor] To use a desktop environment on Linux, we'll use software that can draw and update graphics from programs on the screen. And the most popular of these are X.Org, which is also called X11 or just X, and Wayland. This software is made up of a few components connected together with various protocols. Part of the system is called a display server in the case of X11 or the compositor in the case of Wayland. This software displays graphics on the screen. And the programs that provide the graphics are called clients. And they communicate with the server either through X11 or Wayland protocols. Usually we'll run clients and the server on our local machine, though X11 does support running a server on the local machine with clients on a remote machine over a network connection.
