- [Instructor] The GNOME desktop is a widely used desktop environment across many distros. It's the default for Ubuntu desktop, Fedora, CentOS, and a variety of others, and we can install it and use it both with the X and Wayland display servers. GNOME desktop uses the gdm3 display manager. Let's install GNOME desktop here on Ubuntu. First I'll update my package lists with app update. And then I'll write apt install gnome. On other distros, you may need to search with your package manager to find the right package to get GNOME installed. Here on my system, I can see a huge list of software that will be installed, totaling over two gigabytes. That's going to take a while to install, so we'll speed up the process. In here, I can see that I'm getting a variety of applications, so right out of the box, GNOME's going to be pretty useful. Of course, we can always install other apps later too.
