- [Tutor] Well, some desktop environments offer really nice animations, effects and other visual goodness. There are times when we might want a more basic or simpler desktop. Xfce is one of these lightweight desktops and it's quite popular in settings where gooey is needed but where resources aren't available to run a fancier desktop smoothly. And it's popular amongst users who might have the resources for other desktops but who prefer a lighter, more minimal desktop. It's the default desktop for Xubuntu and some other distros. To install Xfce here on Ubuntu, first I'll update my package lists with app update and then I'll write app install Xfce 4. This will make sure I have all the software I need to run Xfce including the X windows server. At the time of recording this at the end of 2020, Xfce supports X but not Wayland.
