- There are many different desktop environments in Linux. Red Hat historically used the GNOME 2 desktop. GNOME 2 two was a traditional desktop that was fairly basic and easy to use. Between the release of Enterprise Linux 6 and Enterprise Linux 7, the GNOME Project stopped supporting GNOME 2 and replaced it with a GNOME 3, a paradigm shift in desktop workflow. Enough people missed GNOME 2 that it was revived as a separate project named MATE. MATE looks and feels just like GNOME 2 and works on computers without 3D graphics cards, making it useful for remote desktop sessions and virtualization. Because GNOME 3 has such a different workflow, I think it's important to talk about it. The philosophy of GNOME 3 revolves around using space efficiently.
