Exploring Debian

- [Instructor] Debian is a popular Linux distribution for both server and desktop roles. Debian has a long history, and it's been very influential in the development of many later distributions. Ubuntu, Kali, Mint, and many other distros take their core set of tools and decisions from Debian. And in this episode, I'd like to cover a few of the high points. Debian was started by Ian Murdock and was first released in 1993. It's supported by the Debian Project, and is developed by a broad team of open-source engineers, developers, and enthusiasts. Stable releases of Debian are named for characters in the "Toy Story" movie series. Version nine was called Stretch, version 10 is called Buster, and 11 will be called Bullseye. The Unstable branch is always called Sid. While many decisions go into creating a distribution, there are a few big ones that represent defining choices for Debian.
