Exploring ZFS

- [Instructor] ZFS is a popular file system and volume management system. It allows us to create storage pools spread across more than one disk as a way to increase reliability and data integrity. Using ZFS, we combine physical drives into Vdevs, or virtual devices, and on top of that sits a Z Pool, which represents the root of the ZFS file system. Within a Z Pool, we can create datasets which represent either file systems or block storage to further subdivide and manage the space available. Within Vdevs, disks can be arranged in a few ways. As mirrors, as various RAID layouts, and as a bunch of disks, each containing a different part of the data represented in the file system. Each of these arrangements has its own advantages and disadvantages, and if you're building a system using ZFS, you'll need to decide which kind works best for your workload.
