Exploring logs
- [Instructor] A Debian system keeps logs of system activity that you can browse for troubleshooting and use to find out what's going on. Most of these are kept in the var log directory So let's switch over there now, and take a look. Some of the interesting logs here are syslog, which is the overall system log, kernlog, which is the kernel log, and authlog, which is the log of authentications that have occurred. For the most part, we'll focus on syslog because it includes the information from the kernel log and from other sources. Many programs and services write to this log and you can even add entries to the log from the command line with a logger comand. We can take a look at these logs with a cat command, or with a pager like less.
