Foundations: Installing Linux in a virtual machine

- [Scott] If you don't have a computer you can install Linux on directly, using a virtual machine is a great option. A virtual machine is a protected space that acts like a separate computer that uses some of the resources of your real computer, but keeps the contents of the virtual space separate from the host. So, you can work in a virtual machine without worrying that you're harming anything on the host. Even if you delete everything on the virtual machine's hard drive, it won't have any negative impact on the host. Virtual machines are very popular for software testing and for trying out new operating systems because they're so quick and easy to set up and there's no threat to a host's system. There are a few different kinds of software that provide virtual machine functionality, including Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare, Parallels for the Mac, and my favorite, VirtualBox from Oracle.
