- [Instructor] Installing Linux as a bootable operating system on a physical computer is called a bare metal or native install. It allows you to start up your computer in Linux and use all of your computer's resources, rather than using only a portion of them in a virtual machine. You can install Linux as the only operating system on a computer, or you can install it alongside others. In this episode, I'm going to install it as the only operating system, replacing an existing Windows installation. The installation process will take a few minutes, so we've sped up the video for the long boring parts. But be prepared to spend at least 30 minutes or so to get to a point where you can use the new operating system. And you'll need to find out some specific options for the hardware you're installing on before starting.
