How email works - Linux Tutorial
From the course: Cert Prep LPIC-1 Exam 102 (Version 5.0)
How email works
- [Instructor] It helps to visualize how email systems work. Let's go through the process of an email going from one user to another. The mail is composed and then sent on by the mail user agent using SMTP. The mail submission agent that resides on the mail server accepts the message and adds it to the mail queue for further processing. The mail transport agent on the mail server then transports that email to another mail server on the network or internet using the SMTP protocol. The MTA receives the mail, and the mail delivery agent stores it in a mail spool, waiting for the mail user agent to retrieve it. Lastly, the MTA authenticates the mail user agent, which downloads the mail message using either POP3 or IMAP protocols.
