- [Narrator] The graphical system that currently underpins Linux is X Windows, or X for short. X is network-aware, and in fact, acts like it's running remotely, even when the application is local, with both the X Server and the X Client running on one machine. Because X is network-aware, it's very easy to run an application remotely. The terminology is opposite of what you might think, though. The X Server talks to the video card, mouse, and keyboard, so the X Server is on the local computer. The X Client is run where the application resides, on the remote computer. X provides basic constructs for creating a GUI interface, like screens, windows, pointers, mouse, and keyboard inputs. It doesn't define the look of the interface or how it works. X also allows you to remotely export the entire desktop or just one application. By default, X doesn't provide encryption.
