A Mail Transport Agent or MTA is a program which transports email between mail servers. There are a lot of MTA's available for Linux. In this video, we'll discuss a few. The old standby and first killer application for the internet is Sendmail. Sendmail came out in 1983, and by 1996, had 80% of the MTA market share. As recently as 2005, Sendmail had fallen to 35%, and as of this recording, was down to 4%. Sendmail is big and difficult to configure, and complex to secure. There aren't many Sendmail servers of production these days. Postfix came out in 1998, about the time that Sendmail had near total dominance of the MTA market. It was created by IBM as a drop-in replacement for Sendmail. And was created in response to Sendmail's security and configuration issues.
