- [Instructor] GPG, or GNU Privacy Guard, is an implementation of the proprietary PGP, or Pretty Good Privacy program. It's primarily used to encrypt emails but can be used to encrypt files as well. GPG utilizes a combination of public and private keys, making it difficult to crack. GPG should be installed but if it is not, you'll want to install the package named gnupg2. We're going to start out by generating some GPG keys. We'll use the gen key option for this. Type into a terminal gpg2 --gen-key and hit Enter. Take the default for the type of key, take the default for the key size, take the default for the amount of time before the key expires. The default is that it does not expire. Enter y, for yes to accept. Now, enter your name, I'm going to use user1 and then hit Enter. Hit Enter for email, hit Enter for comment, and press O to accept.
