- [Instructor] Usually when we have two computers on a network, part of what makes them able to communicate actually happens outside of the computers themselves. We often rely on network hardware and services to handle some of the process of getting two computers to a state where they can communicate with each other. Most networks involve hardware like an ethernet switch to connect multiple computers together. We rely on a router to determine how data flows on the network. And we rely on DHCP to hand out IP addresses automatically behind the scenes. But sometimes we need to get information from one computer to another in an environment where we don't have network infrastructure to rely on. We can do that by just using an ethernet cable or, in some cases, a virtual ethernet cable if we're working with virtual machines.
