- [Instructor] When we plug a computer into a network we often take for granted that after a few seconds we'll be able to use that network to access the internet. But behind the convenience there's actually quite a few things that go on in order for this to work. In most cases, systems will be configured to get an IP address from a network via DHCP. When it does this, some other information comes along telling the client system what the address for the network's gateway or router is. That information tells the client how to build a route which is a piece of information that tells the client where to send packets intended for other networks. In the basic case, a client will have a route that says, if you're not sending packets to another system on this local network send them to the gateway. And then the gateway sends those packets unto other networks up stream in order to get them to their destination. The gateway we'll…
